A day I will never forget

In Bora Bora Alex and I did a lot in our ten days. Honestly I wont forget a single one of them but there was one day that was particularly amazing for me and will be at the forefront of my mind for quite some time.

Eco Tour Video!

We picked a day when the weather looked the most sunny and decided to to what was called the “Eco Tour” and crossed our fingers. The thing about an island in the middle of the pacific ocean during the summer months is that the weather is completely unpredictable. One minute it can be the most gorgeous sun filled day the next it could be pouring rain.

We lucked out because this day could not have been more perfect. When I woke up early that Sunday morning the water looked like glass.

On the first stop on our tour we got to get up close and personal with some of the coolest looking animals from the sea: Sting Rays!

When you see them swimming toward you with their undulating bodies it is certainly an awesome sight to behold, and these cute sea creatures were sure not shy. They would swim up your torso in search for a tasty fish treat.

DCIM100GOPRODCIM100GOPROI will never forget their slippery bodies sliding over my feet and up my stomach. It was truly surreal to be swimming among these gentle (barbs removed) gliding pancake like creatures.

Our next stop was to what they call a aquarium, which is full of fish but not so full of coral as with other parts of the island. As soon as the boat was idling the multi-colored dancing fish would swarm to the boat waiting to be fed.

DCIM100GOPROOur guide gave us each bread so we could feed the fish and they surrounded us immediately each vying for the prime bread eating position. Every now and then a fish would miss the bread and take a nibble of my delicious skin.

What a cool experience it is to be completely surrounded by fish!

DCIM100GOPRODCIM100GOPROOur final stop took us outside the glassy lagoon and into the waves crashing on the nearby outer reef.

We were going to meet the sharks!

Our guide was absolutely hilarious and kept saying such things as but not limited to:

  1. “here sharky sharky!”
  2. “Sharky! Room Service!”
  3. “Count your finger and toes before you get in!”
  4. “Lunch is ready sharky!”

Needless to say our guide Didier was a crackup and really rocked that Tarzan-esk loin cloth. To be fair he had the brownest little tush I have ever seen.

We got to swim with two different sharks, the smaller (but not small enough to feel truly comfortable) Black-tip Reef Shark and the larger and much more intense looking Lemon Shark, and a swarm of the weirdest looking black fish I saw in Bora Bora.

We both felt very safe with our guides near by and it was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never ever forget. The next step for us will be cage diving with the great whites in South Australia!
